MITIE GROUP finance director Suzanne Baxter is to join the board of WHSmith.

Baxter has served as group FD of the outsourcing and energy services company since 2006, where she serves alongside the former finance incumbent and chief executive since 2007, Ruby McGregor-Smith.

She will join WHSmith on 4 February, and will chair the audit committee with the retirement of Mike Ellis.

The chartered accountant has held several roles with Serco, and currently holds a seat on the Opportunity Now Advisory Board. The board focuses on gender diversity in the workplace. She has also served as a mentor on the ICAEW's ‘women in leadership' programme.

WHSmith's chairman, Walker Boyd, said: "We are delighted to welcome Suzanne Baxter on to the Board of WHSmith. With her finance and commercial expertise, Suzanne will be a valuable member of the board and an excellent appointment as chair of the audit committee."
