Admiral Group chairman Alastair Lyons is taking on the same role at Serco.
The chartered accountant joins the public sector service specialists as non-executive and takes on the chairmanship following its AGM on 11 May. He will continue as Admiral Group chairman.
The search process was led by senior independent director Baroness Margaret Ford.
Lyons has held senior roles in the banking industry, as well as serving as a non-exec for government departments.
"He brings with him a strong commercial acumen and public service ethos and has a wealth of experience gained in fast-growing companies, supporting UK Government departments and leading boards," said Kevin Beeston, outgoing chairman, Serco Group.
