Capital Shopping Centes, the FTSE 100 property company that owns Lakeside in Thurrock and the Arndale centre in Manchester, has appointed a new FD.

Matthew Roberts, 46, joins Capital after a stint as CFO at gambling and bingo group Gala Coral and before that a period as FD at Debenhams, the department store chain.

Current FD Ian Durant is stepping down and will continue as chairman of Capital and Counties Property.

Patrick Burgess, Capital's chairman, said: "Matthew is a high calibre finance professional with a wide range of relevant experience at substantial companies in the retail and leisure sectors."

Roberts, a member of the ICAEW, led a number of acquisitions and fundraisings including a £3bn debt package. Roberts' work helped build Gala into the largest private equity owned business at the time.

Among Capital's other properties are the Braehead in Glasgow and the Metrocentre in Gateshead.
