HM Revenue and Customs has appointed Simon Bowles as its chief financial officer.
A spokeswoman for the department said the appointment was effective from 17 March.
The CFO post was previously held by Stuart Cruikshank until March 2008 and then in the interim by Phillip Moore who left the post in July 2008.
In November last year, HMRC officials were forced to defend Cruickshank's £88,000 payout for breaking his contract.
The House of Commons Treasury Sub-committee criticised the payout, which was thought to include Cruickshank’s legal advice and ‘outplacement counselling’.
