Taking Stock: You can prove anything with statistics

Sometimes TS doesn't believe what it reads
GIVEN THE DEARTH of women at the highest level of the accountancy firms up and down the land, TS was astonished this morning to read in this morning’s Guardian that the sector is top for “supporting and retaining” female talent.
The revelation comes from career coaching company Talking Talent, which, based on a survey of more than 1,000 professional women, found 94% of female accountants say that their company is supportive.
The worst-performing areas were engineering and manufacturing, with just 11% feeling adequately supported.
TS would be intrigued to know which women in accountancy took part in the survey, because we suspect there’s a chance they haven’t seen the statistics for the number – two in last year’s survey – of female managing partners in the Top 50 firms.
