Labour rebels are mobilising for mutiny after prime minister Gordon Brown ruled out quick concessions to ease the impact on low income earners from the scrapping the 10p tax band,.

In all, 70 backbenchers and six ministerial aides have now publicly voiced concern over the changes, announced in last year's Budget, The Press Association reports.

The 10p band was formally scrapped earlier this month, but the finance bill enacting changes from this year's budget is still before Parliament, providing a focus for a rebellion.

The Tories, who are opposing the tax change supported by the Lib Dems, are calling on chancellor Alistair Darling to ‘get off his backside’ and reverse the reforms.
