Firms to rule on Commons expenses

MPs are appealing to the accountancy profession to help dispel the public impression that they have their snouts in the trough

Written by Our Parliamentary Correspondent

A report from the Commons members estimates committee chaired by speaker Michael Martin has issued a report promising to ‘seek briefings on audit options from the NAO, HM Revenue & Customs, the Audit Commission and private firms of accountants’.

The report was published after Martin issued a statement making it clear he would not be forced out over allegations about charging taxi fares for his wife’s shopping trips.

The committee has undertaken to publish position papers on the issue of MPs’ allowances next month.
