The hiring of his spouse as a consultant for £550 a day has cost a senior official his job.

David Partridge, the chief operating officer of the Revenue & Customs Prosecution Office, had his contract terminated last summer following an inquiry by the department into the employment of his wife Michaela.

According to the Commons public accounts committee, Mrs Partridge or her company had been paid £97,907 since her husband's appointment in September 2005.

Accountancy Age revealed earlier this year that there was an investigation into the situation, delaying the scrutiny of the body's accounts.
