Kennedy to face the heat over HMRC budget

Financial secretary Jane Kennedy called before Treasury Committee over budgets of chancellor's departments

Written by Nicholas Neveling

Financial secretary to the Treasury Jane Kennedy has been summoned to appear before the Treasury select committee to answer questions on spending within the chancellor's departments in 2006-2007.

The hearing, scheduled for 9 January 2008, is likely to be uncomfortable for Kennedy, who will almost certainly be grilled on whether budget cuts at HM Revenue & Customs led to loss of the discs with the personal information of 25 million child benefit recipients.

Kennedy will be joined by Angela Eagle, who less than a year ago was a member of the Treasury Committee herself.
