A macho culture of long hours and male networks is keeping the glass ceiling firmly in place for female accountants in practice, according to ICAS. The institute questioned female members and found that balancing work and family is still a barrier to progress within firms. Consequently, only 13% of ICAS partners in practice are women.
'The reason that women do not reach partnership is obvious – children,' said one female partner. Another claimed that at her first partners' meeting, one male colleague said, 'Oh great, you're here to make the coffee.'
