'Irish tax forms too hard to understand'

Institute makes call after PAYE repayments

The Irish Taxation Institute (ITI) has called for tax reclaim forms to be made much easier to understand after Revenue Commissioners paid back more than €440m (£330m) to workers who paid too much tax. 

The ITI said the amount of the claims was not surprising.

Repayments were made to 667,957 PAYE workers whose claims stretched back four years, following a major publicity campaign.

A survey carried out by the ITI last year showed half of all taxpayers did not understand the tax system - and don't believe they get the right tax relief.

The Consumers Association of Ireland said despite the publicity campaign, 'huge' numbers are unaware of their entitlements.
