Written by Alex Hawkes

Sir Digby Jones is to take up a role in Gordon Brown's government, the prime minister announced today.

The move will mean stepping down from his role at Deloitte, where he works for part of his time as an adviser, the firm said. He will become Lord Jones as part of the moves.

Sir Digby has been appointed minister of state for trade and investment in the new Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. He will also be chair of UK Trade and Investment to push the case for British business.

Sir Digby said that he is looking forward to 'banging the drum for British business of all sectors and all sizes all over the world.'

John Connolly, Deloitte's chief executive and senior partner, said: 'We are delighted and extremely proud of Sir Digby's appointment. Sir Digby has played a valuable role and he is extremely well positioned to provide superb representation of UK business internationally. His broad experience and powerful advocacy skills make him a great choice for this role. We wish him well for the future.'
