The ICAEW expects to hear from the government in the next few weeks whether its members will be able to undertake probate services.
The institute has been lobbying for its members to be able to carry out probate services over the last year, and an answer from the Department for Constitutional Affairs should be imminent.
If agreed, members would be able to prepare papers to obtain a grant of probate on behalf of clients. Currently, only solicitors can undertake this service for clients.
'The application process is a slow one and the department may insist on certain requirements that we would find difficult to accept, but we are trying,' said ICAEW chief executive Michael Izza.
Probate is usually required for executors of a will to distribute its funds.
