Motor tax cuts could follow road pricing plans

Road pricing scheme should be revenue neutral, says Whitehall insider

Written by Kevin Reed

Motoring taxation could be cut, despite the government's plan for a nationwide road pricing scheme.

A Whitehall insider told the FT that a national road pricing scheme could pave the way for changes to the current car tax regime, suggesting a reduction in vehicle excise duty.

'We've always said that, if we did it, it would be a revenue-neutral exercise,' the insider said.

In an email sent by the prime minister to 1.8 million road pricing protestors , Tony Blair said the government was not rushing into road pricing and no firm decision had been made on the strategy.
