Chancellor Gordon Brown has vowed to fight against any plans for future European tax harmonisation, promising that key fiscal decisions will continue to be made in the UK.

In a speech to key financiers in the City, Brown said that the government would resist any efforts from the European Union to push through such 'fatally flawed' plans.
'It is right that the conduct of fiscal policy remains the responsibility of member states,' he said. 'That is why Europe must avoid endorsing a federal style policy which would make the Commission and not member states responsible for fiscal discipline.'
